Often feared but sometimes revered, snakes hold a special place in both the traditional culture and biodiversity of Papua New Guinea. Here’s an insight into the magical, mystical and oft-misunderstood snakes of PNG.

Their presence is wrapped up in mysticism and superstition where many traditional tribes view them as the mortal incarnation of spirits and demons or alternatively hold them in esteem as protectors of crops and guardians of traditional sites.

Meanwhile, snakes are a feature of the rugged PNG landscape, present throughout many of the regions in large, small, venomous and non-venomous form.
